14-DAY KWA-ZULU NATAL

Hereunder follows examples of some of the itineraries that we can offer – again a reminder that we will tailor-make any tour to suit you, whether it is fully guided, partially guided, a self-drive or just staying at one of the many golfing estates, we will do it all for you. These below are just a sample of what can be done and to give you some idea of what’s on offer and possible. Remember, these are just examples, we will tailor make any tour to suit you.

Tour Example: 14-Day Kwa-Zulu Natal

Day 1
On arrival at Durban International Airport you are transferred to the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. Here, in this birdwatchers paradise, there are a number of accommodation options from which to choose, from the casino resort of the Wild Coast Sun to any number of gracious B&B and guesthouse establishments.

Day 2
Play golf this morning at the Wild Coast Sun, Southbroom or San Lameer Courses.  Spend the remainder of the day at the Wild Coast Sun. The Wild Coast Sun, set on one of the most unspoiled beaches in southern Africa, is a resort that attracts visitors for both its natural beauty and its other attractions. The resort is situated just within the Eastern Cape, one kilometer over the border from KwaZulu Natal. The resort is set on 750 hectares of natural bush between the Umtamvuna and Mzamba rivers overlooking the Indian Ocean.
The Eastern Cape and lower south coast areas offer tourists a variety of attractions and activities – from magnificent walks along our unspoilt beaches to hikes in the more rugged regions, arts and craft markets, as well as deep sea fishing and scuba diving, as well as any of the many attractions on offer at the hotel itself.

Day 3
Play golf this morning at the Wild Coast Sun, Southbroom or San Lameer Courses.  This afternoon we visit the nearby Oribi Gorge, a magnificent natural spectacle. The Oribi Gorge was formed over millions of years as the Mzimkulwana River flowed over the flat land surface and picked out fractures in the rock, gradually eroding them away and cutting deep into the earth's crust. At the base of the cliffs there are rocks over 1000 million years old while the cliffs themselves are formed from sandstone deposited about 365 million years ago. Due to its inaccessibility, the gorge has remained virtually untouched by man and has more than 500 plant species. It contains a wealth of semi-deciduous forests criss-crossed with antelope paths, and is home to 250 bird species and numerous small mammals including vervet and the rare Samango monkeys. The flowering plants deep in the gorge provide an enormous range of colours from scarlet red to azure blue. The gorge offers spectacular view sites that are easily accessible for those who wants to just relax and drink in the awesome scenery.

Day 4
Check out of the accommodation and transfer to the Selborne Hotel, Spa and Golf Estate for your next stay. Play golf today at Selborne Course. Selborne has established an international reputation and is now regarded as one of South Africa's most sought-after golfing venues for tourists. The Selborne experience, as a visiting tourist staying in the hotel, is shared with resident bush buck, grey duiker and the rare blue duiker. Monkeys and a myriad of birds take advantage of the natural habitat of the lush foliage, indigenous trees and stately palms that add an aura of grandeur to this well preserved and cared for environment.
Day 4
Play golf this morning at Selborne, Umdoni Park or Scottburgh Courses. This afternoon you are free to do your own thing - there are many beaches on this south coast area where you can spend the afternoon or simply enjoy the benefits of the hotel.

Day 5
Check out of Selborne and transfer to the KZN Midlands or southern Drakensberg for your two nights stay in this beautiful area. Our first choice of accommodation here is the lovely Moorcroft Manor set in the town of Himeville.

Day 6
Play golf this morning at the Sakabula, Bosch Hoek or Glengarry Courses and go on a tour of the Midlands Meander. In 1985 local artists, potters and weavers decided to join forces to create an arts and crafts route. Soon enough, six studios were opened and the Midlands Meander was born. It is also known as the ‘arts and crafts route’. From humble beginnings, the Midlands Meander has grown to more than 160 places to eat, drink, sleep, shop, play as well as a diverse and fascinating mix of arts and crafts. There are weavers, potters, woodcrafters, leather workers, artists, metalworkers, box makers, herb growers, cheese makers, beer brewers and so much more. There is very little time to be bored with the array of activities and things to see. These villages are also set in picturesque landscapes offering magnificent views. There is so much to explore in the Midlands Meander.

Day 7
This morning we transfer to our 4X4 vehicles for the ascent up the Sani Pass and into Lesotho. Breathtaking scenery and alpine conditions dominate this truly magnificent corner of this province. Once we have entered Lesotho we will stop off at a Basutho village where one can learn more about the life of these very friendly people, in this, one of the world’s poorest countries. Lunch will be at the “highest pub in Africa”, the Sani Top Chalet. We will also have some time here to walk along the edge of the escarpment for stunning views into KwaZulu Natal, before descending the pass to Moorcroft Manor. *NB. Warm clothing is a must, no matter the season of the year! You will also need valid passports for the crossing into Lesotho. The ascent of the pass is subject to the prevailing weather conditions.

This tour can be extended to include the following:

Day 8
Check out of our accommodation and transfer to the KZN North Coast where you will be staying at the luxurious Zimbali Coastal Resort, which is a breathtaking 700-hectare Coastal Resort situated on a pristine stretch of KwaZulu-Natal’s Dolphin Coast. It is a place of expansive beauty, endowed with lush vegetation and an abundance of indigenous wildlife. Appropriately, it's Zulu name means ‘valley of flowers’. Featuring inspired architecture that displays an Indonesian influence, the majestic estate offers residents and guests an exceptional quality of life within a pristine natural environment. Located 40km north of Durban and within close proximity to all modern amenities, Zimbali is perfectly positioned to experience the unmatched magnificence of the KwaZulu-Natal province.

Day 9
Play golf today at Zimbali Course.
At Zimbali one can enjoy a game of tennis; splash in the pool; be pampered in the beauty salon or browse through the logo shop. The Zimbali Forest Estate is nature's own wilderness and home to a variety of wildlife. This afternoon you can pamper yourself to a spa treatment or visit the Sharks Board.

Day 10
Play golf this morning at the Durban Country Club, Royal Durban or Durban Beachwood Courses. After the golf you can enjoy a cultural tour, relax at a health spa or visit the nearby Sibaya Casino. You can also simply head back to Zimbali which offers fantastic recreation activities such as horse riding, tennis, hiking, forest walks and much more. The beautiful and scenic towns along KwaZulu-Natal’s Dolphin Coast offer spectacular scenery for hiking and bird watching. South Africa’s domestic playground, Durban, is not too far away.

Day 11
Check out of Zimbali and head north into the Hluluwe area to one of Africa's greatest destinations, Phinda Private Game Reserve. Phinda Private Game Reserve is situated in the lush Maputaland region in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Bordering the iSimangaliso Wetland Park – a World Heritage Site – Phinda comprises 22 500 hectares of prime conservation land. Seven distinct habitats shelter an abundance of wildlife including Africa’s Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, black and white rhino, buffalo) and over 380 bird species, while the marine diversity off the nearby coast of Sodwana is said to rival the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Guests can look forward to exciting game-drives in open 4x4 safari vehicles led by experienced rangers and Zulu trackers, as well as thrilling optional activities on the water, in the air and on the beach.

Day 12
Enjoy the activities and facilities available to you at Phinda. Wildlife to be seen is lion, leopard, black and white rhino, large herds of elephant and the elusive cheetah. At dusk and dawn, guests are taken on game drives in open 4 x 4 safari vehicles by skilled, professional rangers and trackers for a journey of discovery and excitement. For those wanting closer contact with the African wilderness, armed rangers lead guests on interactive bush walks which allow fascinating insights into the landscape, animal tracks and an intriguing host of beetles, butterflies and birds.

As an alternative you may opt to visit the Hluhluwe/Umfolozi Park instead. Here we would spend two nights at Hilltop Camp. The accommodation here is in a brick under thatch chalet, each bedroom with its own private bathroom/wash-basin and toilet. Each chalet is also equipped with a fridge. Our game viewing commences immediately upon entering the gates into the park.
This first evening we go on a night drive in an open game-viewing vehicle with staff from KZN Wildlife, the organisation tasked with running this reserve. This is to improve on your chances of seeing some of the nocturnal species such as leopard (always difficult to find), lion, hyena, genet, bush babies and then the other nocturnal animals such as the owls and nightjars. You also get to see some of the diurnal animals, such as are those that are found in the day.

Day 13
Today will be spent on extended game drives to various areas of the Park, with an early start to make the most of the day and to possibly chance upon one of the predators returning to their day-time lair. This is the game reserve famous for "Operation Rhino" which brought the white rhino back from the brink of extinction. Now you should see just how successful KZN Wildlife has been in this endeavour.
Sightings of rhino, giraffe, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, warthog, baboon, vervet monkey, and antelope such as impala, nyala and kudu are seen frequently and with the possibility of seeing lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, black rhino, hippo, crocodile, monitor lizard, hyena and antelope such as red duiker, steenbuck, waterbuck, bushbuck and then the rare Samango monkey and wild dog, much less frequently. These drives are conducted with your guide in his/her vehicle.

Day 14
Check out of Phinda Forest Lodge (or Hilltop Camp) and make your way to Durban International Airport for your onward flight.

MORE: You may wish to travel from the game reserves of KwaZulu Natal north to the Kruger Park or any of the excellent lodges in the Sabi Sands Private Reserve and then you would stay over in Swaziland, an independent country and the second smallest in Africa, and play golf at the Royal Swazi Sun Golf Course.
