MORE: You can choose to travel a bit further north – here to the very excellent private game lodges such as Phinda or Thanda, or the oldest proclaimed game reserve in Africa, the Hluhluwe/Umfolozi Park.
Phinda Private Game Reserve is situated in the lush Maputaland region in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Bordering the iSimangaliso Wetland Park – a World Heritage Site – Phinda comprises 22 500 hectares of prime conservation land. Seven distinct habitats shelter an abundance of wildlife including Africa’s Big Fiveand over 380 bird species, while the marine diversity off the nearby coast of Sodwana is said to rival the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Guests can look forward to exciting game-drives in open 4x4 safari vehicles led by experienced rangers and Zulu trackers, as well as thrilling optional activities on the water, in the air and on the beach.
Thanda, meaning ‘love’ in Zulu, is an expression of the magical union of the power of Zulu culture, wildlife, romance and exclusivity. Thanda Private Game Reserve is South Africa’s top award winning safari destination and is situated in northern Zululand, in close proximity to the Indian Ocean. The inimitable integration of South Africa’s best climate and rehabilitated and rich bush land has made Thanda home to amazing wildlife and over four hundred bird species. Ignite your imagination and open your mind to an extraordinary experience for your soul, mind and body. It’s the unique and sought after balance between energizing and exclusive relaxation that you want.
The game viewing experience and stay at both Phinda and Thanda is similar to that of the Sabi Sands as described in our 4-Day Kruger Park Safari.
You may in fact wish to travel from the game reserves of KwaZulu Natal north to the Kruger Park or any of the excellent lodges in the Sabi Sands Private Reserve and then you would stay over in Swaziland, an independent country and the second smallest in Africa, and play golf at the Royal Swazi Sun Golf Course.
You may also choose to visit the Battlefields of KwaZulu Natal where two wars took place, the Anglo/Zulu War of 1879 and the Anglo Boer Wars of the late 1800’s, where you can choose to stay at some very good lodges and experience the unfolding story of the history of this country. The Anglo-Zulu War was fought in 1879 between the British and the Zulu Empires. From complex beginnings, the war is notable for several particularly bloody battles, such as Isandlwana and Rorkes’ Drift, as well as for being a landmark in the timeline of colonialism in the region. The war ended the Zulu nation's independence.
The First Boer War, also known as the First Anglo-Boer War or the Transvaal War, was fought from 16 December 1880 until 23 March 1881.
The Second Boer War, commonly referred to as The Boer War and also known as the South African War (outside of South Africa), the Anglo-Boer War was fought from 11 October 1899 until 31 May 1902, between the British Empire and the two independent Boer republics of the South African Republic (Transvaal Republic) and the Orange Free State.
In this region expert historical guides will bring this history to life, and some excellent lodges are found here -, our recommendations are Isandlwana Lodge, Fugitives Drift Lodge and Isisbindi Zulu Lodge. |
