9-DAY KWA-ZULU NATAL/DRAKENSBERG

Hereunder follows examples of some of the itineraries that we can offer – again a reminder that we will tailor-make any tour to suit you, whether it is fully guided, partially guided, a self-drive or just staying at one of the many golfing estates, we will do it all for you. These below are just a sample of what can be done and to give you some idea of what’s on offer and possible. Remember, these are just examples, we will tailor make any tour to suit you.

Tour Example: 9-Day Kwa-Zulu Natal/Drakensberg

Day 1
You are collected from your hotel in Durban or from the Durban Airport and we then travel to the Drakensberg Mountains, to the Champagne Sports Resort, (or similar) which is situated in the Central Drakensberg with sweeping views of the Champagne and Cathkin Peaks. The afternoon is spent at leisure, going for a hike or just relaxing in this area of scenic delight. The Drakensberg is the highest mountain range in Southern Africa, rising to 3,482 metres (11,420 ft) in height. In Zulu, it is referred to as uKhahlamba ("barrier of spears"), and in Sesotho as Maluti (also spelled Maloti). Its geological history lends it a distinctive character amongst the mountain ranges of the world. Geologically, the range resembles the Simien Mountains of Ethiopia and is a World Heritage Site.

Day 2
Breakfast is followed by a round of golf at the Champagne Resort, Monks Cowl or Cathedral Peak Courses. After our round of golf we head into the southern Drakensberg to the town of Himeville where we overnight.

Day 3:
This morning we transfer to our 4X4 vehicles for the ascent up the Sani Pass and into Lesotho. Breathtaking scenery and alpine conditions dominate this truly magnificent corner of this province. Once we have entered Lesotho we will stop off at a Basutho village where one can learn more about the life of these very friendly people, in this, one of the world’s poorest countries. Lunch will be at the “highest pub in Africa”, the Sani Top Chalet. We will also have some time here to walk along the edge of the escarpment for stunning views into KwaZulu Natal, before descending the pass to our overnight accommodation. *NB. Warm clothing is a must, no matter the season of the year! You will also need valid passports for the crossing into Lesotho. The ascent of the pass is subject to the prevailing weather conditions – the pass has been closed on occasion due to heavy snowfall, once for twenty eight days!

Day 4
After a leisurely breakfast we make our way to the sub tropical South Coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal, where endless golden beaches line the Indian Ocean and many championship courses await. We check into our overnight accommodation and the remainder of the day is at leisure.

Day 5
This morning we tee off at the Wild Coast Sun. This afternoon we visit the nearby Oribi Gorge, a magnificent natural spectacle. The Oribi Gorge was formed over millions of years as the Mzimkulwana River flowed over the flat land surface and picked out fractures in the rock, gradually eroding them away and cutting deep into the earth's crust. At the base of the cliffs there are rocks over 1000 million years old while the cliffs themselves are formed from sandstone deposited about 365 million years ago. Due to its inaccessibility, the gorge has remained virtually untouched by man and has more than 500 plant species. It contains a wealth of semi-deciduous forests criss-crossed with antelope paths, and is home to 250 bird species and numerous small mammals including vervet and the rare Samango monkeys. The flowering plants deep in the gorge provide an enormous range of colours from scarlet red to azure blue. The gorge offers spectacular view sites that are easily accessible for those who want to just relax and drink in the awesome scenery.

Day 6
After breakfast a short drive leads to the Southbroom or San Lameer Courses. In the afternoon we head to our next destination on the coast. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the many delights in this area, or just to enjoy the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

Day 7
Selborne, Umdoni Park or Scottburgh Courses are on the agenda for the day. After your round of golf we travel past Durban to our next venue north a few kilometers north of this city.

Day 8
Tee off is at the Zimbali, Mt. Edgecombe or Princes’ Grant this morning. This afternoon we visit the nearby Sharks Board in Umhlanga Rocks where you can learn more about these amazing animals and the success of this organisation, or take in some shopping at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping. The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board (KZNSB) is a service organisation that protects beach users in KwaZulu-Natal against shark attack. It has over forty years of experience in prevention of shark attack and research on sharks. Its staff act as consultants throughout the world and are willing to advise anyone with a shark attack problem. The KZNSB supports and promotes the conservation of sharks. Visit the only organisation of its kind in the world and learn about sharks and the prevention of shark attack.

Day 9: Departure
After breakfast you are transferred to Durban Airport for your onward flight.

MORE: You can choose to travel a bit further north – here to the very excellent private game lodges such as Phinda or Thanda, or the oldest proclaimed game reserve in Africa, the Hluhluwe/Umfolozi Park.

Phinda Private Game Reserve is situated in the lush Maputaland region in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Bordering the iSimangaliso Wetland Park – a World Heritage Site – Phinda comprises 22 500 hectares of prime conservation land. Seven distinct habitats shelter abundance of wildlife including Africa’s Big Five and over 380 bird species, while the marine diversity off the nearby coast of Sodwana is said to rival the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Guests can look forward to exciting game-drives in open 4x4 safari vehicles led by experienced rangers and Zulu trackers, as well as thrilling optional activities on the water, in the air and on the beach.

Thanda, meaning ‘love’ in Zulu, is an expression of the magical union of the power of Zulu culture, wildlife, romance and exclusivity. Thanda Private Game Reserve is South Africa’s top award winning safari destination and is situated in northern Zululand, in close proximity to the Indian Ocean. The inimitable integration of South Africa’s best climate and rehabilitated and rich bush land has made Thanda home to amazing wildlife and over four hundred bird species. Ignite your imagination and open your mind to an extraordinary experience for your soul, mind and body. It’s the unique and sought after balance between energizing and exclusive relaxation that you want.

The game viewing experience and stay at both Phinda and Thanda is similar to that of the Sabi Sands as described in our 4-Day Kruger Park Safari.

You may in fact wish to travel from the game reserves of KwaZulu Natal north to the Kruger Park or any of the excellent lodges in the Sabi Sands Private Reserve and then you would stay over in Swaziland, an independent country and the second smallest in Africa, and play golf at the Royal Swazi Sun Golf Course.

You may also choose to visit the Battlefields of Kwa/Zulu Natal where two wars took place, the Anglo/Zulu War of 1879 and the Anglo Boer Wars of the late 1800’s, where you can choose to stay at some very good lodges and experience the unfolding story of the history of this country. The Anglo-Zulu War was fought in 1879 between the British Empire and the Zulu Empire. From complex beginnings, the war is notable for several particularly bloody battles, such as Isandlwana and Rorkes’ Drift, as well as for being a landmark in the timeline of colonialism in the region. The war ended the Zulu nation's independence.

The First Boer War, also known as the First Anglo-Boer War or the Transvaal War, was fought from 16 December 1880 until 23 March 1881. The Second Boer War, commonly referred to as The Boer War and also known as the South African War (outside of South Africa), the Anglo-Boer War was fought from 11 October 1899 until 31 May 1902, between the British Empire and the two independent Boer republics of the South African Republic (Transvaal Republic) and the Orange Free State.

In this region expert historical guides will bring this history to life, and some excellent lodges are found here -, our recommendations are Isandlwana Lodge, Fugitives Drift Lodge and Isisbindi Zulu Lodge.
